Exploring the Three Heavens: A Spiritual Journey

HOW AWESOME WOULD IT BE TO TAKE AN EXCITING TOUR OF THE SUPERNATURAL? I hear what you are thinking- can we? Of course we can. In the spirit of course! Imagine that we are on a spiritual journey. We pass through the first, second, and third heaven with the God-ordained part of your imagination. Then heaven and hell become more real to us than ever. Is that possible? Yes, it is! But for now, let’s rap our head around that the truth that the whole earth and heavens belong to God. All you have to do is believe! Do you believe? Good . . .let’s move on!

SO WHAT IS THE FIRST HEAVEN? The first heaven is the realm we live in right now. This realm includes the sky, the stars, the moon, the planets, and the universe. This was one of the realms mentioned in the creation story. “Then God said, ‘Let the waters under the heavens be gathered into one place. Let the dry land appear.’ And it was so. (Gen. 1:9) The second heaven overlays the first heaven. And it can only be seen through our spiritual eyes (faith eyes or our eyes of understanding). And it is also called the invisible realm. And the third heaven is the abode or dwelling place of God. It is translated ” Paradise.” The third heaven is not an experience-it is a place or realm. It is just like the other heavens. You and I may have a dream or vision or a revelation there or something about it. We may be caught up in the spirit into the third heaven or be transported there in the Spirit.

NOW IT’S TIME TO TAKE A GLIMPSE AT THE HARD STUFF- THE REALMS OF HELL! Ready! Take a deep breath and let’s go. We’ve already established that the whole earth and the heavens belong to God. The devil doesn’t own the second heavens. The devil doesn’t even own hell. God created the whole universe and it’s under His control. Here are other realms under the earth. I know this is mind blowing but hang in here with me. Here we go- in the Bible, Sheol refers to natural death or the grave. From there souls make their journey into heaven or Hades depending on whether they are saved or not. The word is defined as, grave, pit, the world of the dead and the subterranean retreat. (Strong’s Concordance #7585 (Hebrew). sh’owl, sheh-ole’ or shol, sheh-ole; from 7592; hades or the world of the dead (as if a subterranean retreat), include its accessories and inmates-grave, hell, pit).

WHAT DOES SCRIPTURE SAYS ABOUT SHEOL? 1. In the prime of my life, I shall go to the gates of Sheol. I am deprived of the reminder of my years (Is. 38:10). 2. Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might. There is no work, device, knowledge, or wisdom in the grave (SHELOL) where you are going. (Eccl. 9:10). 3. For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption (Ps. 16:10). 4. Drought and heat consume the snow waters, so does Sheol those who have sinned (Job 24:19 NAS). 5. If I ascend to heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there (Ps. 139:8 NAS). 6. If I look for Sheol as my home, I make my bed in the darkness; if I call to the pit, ‘ You are my father”, to the worm, ” my mother and my sister.” Where is my hope? And who regards my hope? Will it go down with me to Sheol? Shall we together go down into the dust? (Job 17:13-16 NAS).

WHAT DOE SCRIPTURE SAY ABOUT HADES/ABRAHAM’S BOSOM? Hades means the place or state of departed souls, the grave, the unseen. Before Jesus’ death and resurrection, people who were dead went into holding places. The righteous went to Abraham’s bosom. The unrighteous went to a pit called Hades, which means “THE ABODE OF THE DEAD.” (Strong’s Concordance #86 (Greek) haides hah’-dace from I (as negative particle) and 1492; properly unseen, i. e. “Hades” or the place (state) of departed souls; -the grave, Hell.) Both Hades and Abraham’s bosom are geographically in the same region; a huge gulf or chasm separates them, but souls on one side can see others across the divide. The Catholic Church got the idea of purgatory from Abraham’s Bosom (See Luke 16:19-26).

ABRAHAM’S BOSOM WAS EMPTIED AT THE CROSS! Jesus’ blood opened a way to heaven for them. It also opened a way for us when He ascended on high. The people in Abraham’s bosom were the saints who came out of the graves. They were seen walking around after Jesus’ resurrection. They were on their way to heaven with Him . . . The graves were opened. Many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised. After His resurrection, they came out of the graves. They went into the holy city and appeared to many.” (Matt. 27:52-53). Since the Cross, the dead in Christ are not in Abraham’s bosom any longer; they are actually in heaven. Today when Christians die, we instantly go into God’s presence. ” We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord”. (2 Cor. 5:8). The Cross did away with the holding place for the righteous. The unrighteous before and after the cross are still being held in Hades.

WHEN JESUS WAS CRUCIFIED, HE WENT TO HADES. HE TOOK BACK THE KEYS THE DEVIL HAS STOLEN FROM ADAM AND EVE! They are keys to Hades and Death. He’s the victor forever! As Christ said, ” I am He who lives and was dead, and behold, I am forever alive, forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and Death.” (Rev. 1:18).

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT THE ABYSS? Who will descend into the abyss? (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead) (Rom. 10:17). The Bible uses the term abyss several ways. In the Greek it means deep bottomless pit, depth less. (Strong’s Concordance #12 (Greek) abussos ab ‘us-sos from I (as a negative particle) and a variation of 1037; depthless. i. e. (specially) (infernal) “abyss”-deep, (bottomless) pit.) In Luke it describes a prison for disobedient spirits. It’s like Alcatraz for demons. “And they begged Him (Jesus) that He would not command them to go into the abyss.” (Luke 8:31).

THE DEMONS, WHO ARE IN THE SECOND HEAVEN, ARE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR A BODY TO INHABIT. Hey, I get it! Most likely you are thinking this isn’t possible if they are in the abyss. They no longer have freedom to roam. This is why the demons begged Jesus to send them into the pigs. It’s obvious that they preferred the pigs and not the abyss. It may be hard for you to grasp. But demons want to inhabit a body. Why? This allows them to stay in the earth realm. The demons were saying to Jesus, “We know You’ve come to set humans free.” They asked, “Can we live in the pigs?” Just don’t send us back to that place!” The abyss is horrible, and devils suffer too. The bigger ones pick on the smaller ones. They hate each other, not just people. They only cooperate with each other if it futures their own purposes. There’s no unity among the demons.

SCRIPTURE ALSO CALLS THE ABYSS THE SHAFT OF THE BOTTOMLESS PIT. It seems they are the same place. This dark place is also called, “the shaft or the abyss.” We just looked at “the abyss” above. It’s important to understand that demons on earth need a body. They use the body to inhabit and express their evil nature. This explains a lot. Doesn’t it! When Jesus was about to cast out the Legion of demons from the demoniac, they begged Him. They asked Him not to send them to the abyss. (Luke 8:31). To them, inhabiting a pig seemed like a better option than the bottomless pit. Scripture tells us that some devils are restrained in chains in the abyss waiting for judgment. And the angels did not keep their proper domain. They left their own abode. He has reserved them in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day. (Jude 1:6). Other demons are waiting to be released during the tribulation. (See Rev. 9:1-15.). And yes, there is a place called “HELL”. In Revelation 20:1-4, we see that Satan will be restrained in this pit during Jesus’ thousand-year reign. He will then be released before being thrown into hell.

WILL BELIEVERS EVER STAND BEFORE THE GREAT WHITE THRONE TO BE JUDGED? The good news is no believers will never stand before the Great White Throne to be judged. This is the judgment for all unbelievers, the devil and his demons. (Read Revelation 20:11-15). Take it from a mature Seer. Understanding these realms will give you the foundation you need. This foundation will help you. It will support you as you grow in the Gifts of the Spirit. It is especially helpful for those who have in the Gift of Discerning of Spirits. Why? There will always be someone that will challenge you when you talk about what you discern in the spirit. You better have an understanding of what Scripture says about the heavenly realms. Additionally, you should understand who you are in Christ. Know what authority you have in Him and in His name. I suggest that you make sure you understand these things. You need this understanding before you step on to God’s battlefield. This is important as you fight the good fight of faith.

God Bless You!
